About
Jamie K.

I started my first company at 18 and transferred to a new school to scale it to well over a six-figure business. I ultimately decided it wasn’t what I wanted to do and pivoted from retail/eCommerce to product management and am now at Atomic Venture Studio (the studio behind HIMS/Hers, Found, Openstore, Terminal.io, and many others). I’ve worked for myself, a Fortune 500 (Macy’s), a Fortune 1 (Walmart), joined an early stage startup that became a unicorn ($1.B Evaluation), and navigated what would be the best next move (joining a pre-product team as a founding team member, venture studio, or business school) before landing at Atomic! I’m obsessed with start-ups across all sectors and love to help people navigate their career journeys to meet their goals.

also enjoys talking about...
  • Not knowing what the next move is in your career: How do you make sure that you end up working on things you’re excited and passionate about? Finding the right company size/culture that is the best for you?
  • Dealing with imposter syndrome:  Deciding to pivot careers can be scary but it's all about confidence and believing you’re the best person for the job!
  • Being a product leader without a traditional technical background: There are many paths to product management and gaining technical experiences without a computer science or engineering background!
  • Moving to a new city for work: I moved to a new city within 3 days of accepting a new job and 2 weeks after the first interview (so I hadn’t even processed actually moving)! I know how scary it can feel to make such a big sacrifice for your career (but also extremely rewarding).
  • Realizing your dream job isn’t actually your dream job (or career): Until I was 23 my dream job was to be a buyer and go through the Macy’s Executive Development Program. The dream came true and I almost immediately realized I hated it (for someone who is super type-a and career oriented this can feel soul-crushing and terrifying). Realizing this is OK is huge and most people change careers numerous times before they figure out what they want to do!
  • Managing chronic health issues and career: I have had chronic health issues my whole live which is a full-time job in it of itself and can be difficult to balance with work/career. Needing to take care of yourself should always be a priority!
  • Deciding to go to business school or not: I applied to business school at the same time I applied to jobs I thought I needed an MBA to get. To my surprise, I got the job after I and was accepted to B-school, but I didn’t realize how difficult the decision to go or not would still be. I really learned how to evaluate whether or not school was the right choice for me, but had it not been for the job landing where I planned to post-MBA I likely would have gone! It can be a really powerful tool to help you pivot to a new career or organization.
  • Distributed teams and starting a new job remotely: This can be really scary and isolating but I’ve learned a bunch of tools to still build personal relationships with coworkers.
